A man from Australia was killed and three other pedestrians were injured after an 87-year-old Kentucky driver ran a red light and crashed into people in a downtown Nashville crosswalk Saturday afternoon.
Metro Nashville Police said Thomas Cahill, 87, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving south on 4th Avenue when he ran the red light at the Broadway intersection. His 2013 Ford Fusion struck pedestrians who were crossing the street.
The victim was identified as Timothy Wedlock, 58, of Australia.
A 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while a 58-year-old woman from Parsons is listed in critical but stable condition.
Cahill and his 90-year-old wife were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The wife’s caregiver, who was riding in the back seat, was not hurt. She told investigators she had been using her phone and looked up after hearing the impact.
The investigation remains ongoing as officers work to determine what caused Cahill to run the red light. Police said there were no signs that he was impaired.
