A major expansion of I-24 between Nashville and Murfreesboro will add new tolled Choice Lanes while keeping the existing general-purpose lanes free for drivers.
The two new Choice Lanes will be added in each direction along the I-24 corridor. TDOT says the project is designed to address congestion, improve mobility and connectivity, and provide drivers with another option when a more reliable travel time is important.
TDOT said the project will preserve the existing general-purpose lanes rather than removing them, allowing drivers to choose between the free lanes and the new paid option. Those who choose the new Choice Lanes will pay a user fee. Revenue generated by the Choice Lanes will be used to support the cost of financing, designing, building, operating and maintaining the lanes.
The project received a Finding of No Significant Impact from the Federal Highway Administration, which was approved June 16, 2026.
Public meetings were held this week to give residents an opportunity to review project information and speak with members of the project team.
TDOT says the I-24 Southeast Choice Lanes project is intended to provide additional capacity and more reliable travel options along the heavily traveled corridor between Nashville and Murfreesboro.
