Tennessee shoppers will once again be able to save on back-to-school purchases during the state’s annual sales tax holiday, which runs from Friday, July 31, through Sunday, Aug. 2.
The tax-free weekend begins at 12:01 a.m. on July 31 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 2, allowing shoppers to purchase qualifying items without paying state or local sales tax.
During the holiday, clothing and school supplies priced at $100 or less qualify for the exemption. Computers and tablets priced at $1,500 or less can also be purchased tax-free, saving shoppers nearly 10 percent on eligible purchases.
The exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases, as long as the items are intended for personal use rather than business purposes.
Qualifying items include clothing such as shirts, pants, shoes, and dresses, along with school supplies including backpacks, binders, crayons, paper, pens, and pencils.
Some items are excluded from the holiday, including jewelry, handbags, sports and recreational equipment, printer supplies, household appliances, and computer software sold separately from a computer purchase.
The annual sales tax holiday was first introduced in 2006 and has become a popular back-to-school tradition for families across Tennessee.
A complete list of qualifying and non-qualifying items is available at Tennessee Tax Holiday website.
