Gas prices across Tennessee continue to rise, climbing 11 cents on average over the past week, according to AAA. The state average now sits at $3.92 per gallon — 25 cents higher than a month ago and $1.15 higher than this time last year.
“Crude oil prices surged to over $100 per barrel last week after tensions intensified in the Middle East,” said Megan Cooper, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. She added that while price increases slowed over the weekend, continued elevated crude prices could push pump prices higher throughout the week.
The last time Tennessee’s average climbed above $4 per gallon was in early May, when prices peaked at $4.21. At today’s prices, filling a 15-gallon tank costs roughly $17 more than it did a year ago.
National Gas Prices
Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline rose 16 cents over the past week to $4.31, driven by the same climbing crude oil prices. Volatility in the Strait of Hormuz has pushed crude back into the $100-per-barrel range for the first time since July, with pump prices now comparable to early June levels. The increase is notable because it’s occurring during a season when gas prices typically fall due to lower demand.
New data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows gasoline demand dropped last week, from 8.92 million barrels per day to 8.55 million. Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline supply rose from 205.7 million to 206.9 million barrels, and gasoline production fell from 9.8 million to 9.3 million barrels per day.
National Oil Market Dynamics
At the close of Wednesday’s trading session, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose $3.02 to settle at $96.05 a barrel. The EIA also reported that U.S. crude oil inventories dipped slightly, down 0.4 million barrels to 424.1 million — in line with the five-year average.
