Nashville Zoo is celebrating the birth of three two-lined forest pitvipers, an uncommon species that has rarely been successfully bred in zoos across the country.
The tiny snakelets arrived weighing only about 3 grams each and have already grown to around 10 grams. Unlike many snakes, this species gives birth to live young.
The Zoo says raising the two-lined forest pitvipers can be challenging because they can be picky eaters. But so far, these three are doing great, consistently eating and growing under the care of Nashville Zoo’s Herpetology Team.
Guests can see the babies’ father in the Unseen New World exhibit, while the three snakelets continue growing behind the scenes.
