Cannon County Schools will soon begin providing age-appropriate firearm safety instruction for students in grades K–12, in accordance with Tennessee state law (Tenn. Code Ann. § 49-6-1016).
The program, developed by the Tennessee Departments of Education and Safety in partnership with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, focuses on teaching students how to stay safe if they ever encounter a firearm. Lessons emphasize that students should never touch a firearm, leave the area immediately, and notify an adult.
No live firearms or ammunition will be used. Instruction will be delivered in an age-appropriate manner through classroom discussions or videos, led by School Resource Officers and/or school counselors.
Parents and guardians with questions are encouraged to contact their child’s school administration. The district said the lessons aim to ensure that all students know how to respond safely and responsibly in situations involving firearms.
