The win was the first of the season for the Tigers, who improved to 1-3, and their seventh straight over the Rattlers, which extended their all-time series lead to 32-24. Lee completed 18 of 27 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Paul scored all three Tennessee State offensive touchdowns, one rushing and two receiving, and finished with 128 yards from scrimmage.
Tennessee State also got key plays on defense and special teams. Jalen LaBranche returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown. After Florida A&M went ahead 26-20 with 5:12 left, Rymen Mosley blocked the extra point and Syncere Safeeullah returned it 97 yards for two points to make it 26-22. The Tigers won the turnover battle 2-0 and held Florida A&M to 134 rushing yards, even though the Rattlers had a 449-390 edge in total offense.
Tennessee State has an open date before starting OVC play at Western Illinois on Oct. 3, with a 3 p.m. CT kickoff in Macomb, Illinois.
