McConaughey and writer-director Andrew Patterson appeared at The Belcourt Theatre on Thursday, August 13, to screen the film ahead of its theatrical release.
After the movie, McConaughey and his band, The Last Bison, which contributed music to the film, performed live songs featured in the movie.
In the film, McConaughey plays Amziah King, an Oklahoma beekeeper, honey-business owner and bluegrass musician whose life becomes increasingly complicated when his former foster daughter, Kateri, returns. Newcomer Angelina LookingGlass stars as Kateri, with Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Rob Morgan, Tony Revolori, Scott Shepherd and Jake Horowitz also appearing in the cast.
The music-heavy role required McConaughey to learn a new skill before filming. The actor said he spent months learning to play the mandolin and sing at the same time. The Rivals of Amziah King originally premiered at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in March 2025. The film opened in limited theaters on August 14 and expands nationwide on Friday, August 21.
McConaughey’s Nashville stop was part of a series of appearances surrounding the film’s release.
