Chipotle Mexican Grill is turning a soccer hydration break into a $1 million free burrito giveaway on July 19, when the international tournament final airs. The promotion — called the Chipotle “Water” Break — plays off the long-running joke about customers filling complimentary water cups with lemonade at the beverage station. More Eat & Drink News
What the Chipotle Water Break Is
When play pauses for the match’s second official hydration break on July 19, Chipotle will post a video to its @Chipotle Instagram account featuring three shuffling water cups — one filled with lemonade. Viewers have to track the right cup, and at the end of the video, the lemonade cup reveals a text-to-win code.
How to Get a Free Chipotle Entrée
The first 100,000 people to text the code to 888-222 after the reveal will receive a free entrée offer. Codes are valid for any regularly priced entrée, subject to availability, through July 24, 2026. The promotion is open to U.S. residents age 13 and older. Standard text and data rates may apply. Full terms are available at chipotle.com/water-break.
The Story Behind the Water Cup
Chipotle’s free water cups have been an inside joke in the brand’s fan community for years, with guests “accidentally” filling them with lemonade from the beverage station. Chipotle has leaned into the bit with self-aware social posts acknowledging the recurring accidents (here, here, and here).
Part of a Bigger Soccer Summer for Chipotle
The Water Break follows last month’s Matchday BOGO, which Chipotle says became the biggest promotional day in company history. The brand’s jersey BOGO deals have become a seasonal tradition, with fans showing up in everything from official kits to homemade gear (see here, here, and here). This summer’s tournament has also been Chipotle’s introduction to international visitors across North America experiencing the brand for the first time.
