Nashville’s airport could soon carry the name of one of Tennessee’s most beloved star.
According to Nick Beres with Channel 5, the airport board is expected to approve the proposal Friday to rename the airport Dolly Parton International Airport. Beres reported that a member of the seven-person board told him all seven members are expected to unanimously vote in favor of the name change.
The airport would keep its BNA designation, honoring Col. Harry S. Berry, who helped build the airport in 1939.
The proposed name change follows support from Gov. Bill Lee and the airport’s CEO. If the board approves the name change, the next step would be working with the Federal Aviation Administration on the administrative process.
The airport board would also immediately work to eliminate Rule 2010-33, which currently requires airport properties to be named only for people who have been dead for at least two years.
The change is expected to cost between $8 million and $10 million coming from a combination of Metro Nashville, state and airport resources, according to Beres.
If the proposal moves forward, travelers would not see the new name immediately. Beres reported that the best estimate from those involved is six months to a year to complete the administrative paperwork and replace signage throughout the airport.
