While most bites cause only minor skin irritation or mild flu-like symptoms, the department says diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and West Nile virus can cause severe pain, long-term nerve or brain damage, and, in rare cases, be fatal.

The department recommends using EPA-approved insect repellents containing ingredients such as DEET or picaridin, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors, and treating clothing and gear with permethrin. Residents are also encouraged to eliminate standing water around their homes, where mosquitoes can breed.

Health Commissioner Dr. John Dunn said Tennesseans should continue enjoying outdoor activities while taking simple precautions to reduce their risk of tick- and mosquito-borne illnesses. For many of these diseases, there are no vaccines or specific treatments, making prevention especially important.
