Miller currently serves as CEO of Michigan Medicine and executive vice president for medical affairs at the University of Michigan. He will officially take over the Vanderbilt roles on Jan. 1, 2027.

He succeeds Dr. Jeff Balser, who announced earlier this year that he will retire on Dec. 31 after leading Vanderbilt Health and the School of Medicine for nearly 20 years.

Miller was chosen following a nationwide search conducted by the Vanderbilt Health Board of Directors.

At Michigan Medicine, Miller has held several leadership positions and helped lead efforts to expand access to care, improve patient safety and strengthen health care services across the state. Before becoming CEO, he served as executive vice dean for clinical affairs and president of U-M Health, overseeing an organization with about 20,000 employees and more than 1.3 million patients.

A practicing urologist specializing in prostate cancer, Miller has authored more than 300 research articles and has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Vanderbilt University Chancellor Daniel Diermeier said Miller will play a key role in advancing the institution’s work in patient care, research and medical education, while Balser called him a seasoned leader with deep experience in health care, research and teaching.

Miller said he is honored to lead one of the country’s top academic health care organizations and is looking forward to meeting Vanderbilt faculty, staff and students and becoming part of the Nashville community.
