New Senior Account Features Rolled Out
Uber added several features to senior accounts to make requesting rides and meeting drivers simpler. Simple mode offered an easier-to-navigate app layout with larger text and clearer icons. Pickup preferences let riders tell their driver how they wanted to be signaled at pickup, whether by phone call, text message, horn honk, or flashing headlights.
Seniors also gained an optional self-identification setting. When turned on, this let drivers know a rider was an older adult before arriving at the pickup location, giving drivers context that could mean allowing extra time to reach the vehicle or taking more care during pickup. Riders controlled whether this information was shared.
Easy Entry Vehicle Pilot Launched in Nine Cities
Uber began piloting an easy entry vehicle feature in nine cities aimed at riders who had difficulty getting in and out of certain cars, including seniors and people with disabilities. When selected, the feature prioritized matching riders with vehicles that had a lower step-in height. Uber developed the option with input from accessibility and aging advocacy groups and people with a range of mobility needs. Riders in participating pilot cities could turn on easy entry vehicles through their Accessibility settings or through senior account settings.
Why Uber Made the Change
The updates were part of Uber’s broader effort to let riders customize the app to fit their individual needs. Older adults could choose to manage rides independently, rely on family support, or mix both approaches depending on the situation, while also tailoring pickup preferences and vehicle options to their comfort level.
