Around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office alerted parents that Smyrna High School was on a precautionary lockdown due to a police investigation. Parents were asked not to come to the school, but were told they could wait at Lifepoint Church if they chose. Officials said all students were safe and that more information would be provided soon. The lockdown has since been lifted after a bomb threat called in Wednesday morning was found to be unfounded, according to Rutherford County Schools.
In a message sent to parents, RCS spokesperson James Evans said police received an anonymous call with a bomb threat against the school. As a precaution, the school was placed on lockdown immediately, a step Evans described as standard procedure.
Law enforcement and multiple other agencies responded to the school. After searching the campus, officials determined the threat was not credible and lifted the lockdown, with the school returning to normal operations. All students are reported safe.
School will not be dismissed early, but parents wishing to pick up their children can do so through the McWilliams Drive entrance, not Bulldog Circle.
Evans thanked parents for their patience and said the district has standard safety and response procedures in place to protect students.
