A suspect died after a security officer opened fire during a shooting incident at the federal courthouse in downtown Nashville Thursday morning, WSMV reports.
The incident happened at the Fred D. Thompson Federal Building & Courthouse at 719 Church St, where police and other first responders were called following reports of a shooting.
According to MNPD, the suspect entered the courthouse armed with a pistol but did not get past the building’s security checkpoint. The suspect reportedly attempted to fire the weapon, but it did not discharge.
A courthouse security officer then fired shots at the suspect.
An MNPD spokesperson says the suspect, who was from out of state, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
Federal authorities will lead the investigation due to the incident taking place on federal property.
