Cantrell will begin the role Aug. 1, succeeding Alan D. Valentine, who has led the organization for the past 28 years. During Valentine’s tenure, the Nashville Symphony experienced significant artistic growth, earned national recognition and expanded its impact throughout the community.
Cantrell most recently served as president and CEO of the Colorado Symphony, where he helped strengthen the organization’s financial position, negotiated collective bargaining agreements and worked with civic leaders to secure a $90 million city bond commitment for the future renovation of Boettcher Concert Hall.
His previous leadership roles include president and CEO of The Florida Orchestra, CEO of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and executive director of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. In those positions, he led financial turnarounds, expanded audiences and fundraising efforts, and developed education and community partnerships.
Before moving into arts administration, Cantrell spent 20 years as a bass trombonist, performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, Boston Ballet and Boston Lyric Opera. His experience as both a professional musician and an executive gives him a broad understanding of an orchestra’s artistic and operational needs.
Cantrell will work alongside Nashville Symphony Music Director Leonard Slatkin as the organization begins its next chapter. Together, they will focus on supporting the Symphony’s musicians and staff, expanding its reach across Middle Tennessee and building on its 80-year history of artistic excellence and community service.
