A Dolly Parton mural in East Nashville was vandalized this week after a man spray-painted the singer’s face black, prompting a social media campaign that quickly spread across the internet.
The mural, located outside The 5 Spot music venue, also includes singer-songwriter Todd Snider. After discovering the damage, the venue posted surveillance video asking the public to help identify the person responsible. The video was widely shared across social media before later being removed.
On Tuesday, The 5 Spot announced that the man has been identified and has spoken with the venue about what happened.
According to The 5 Spot, the man said his actions were not motivated by hate or anger toward any person, the building, or any group. The venue said he appears to be experiencing a mental health crisis.
“The muralist will be back to clean it up,” The 5 Spot said in an update, adding that the latex paint used in the vandalism may be able to peel off without causing permanent damage.
The venue also thanked the public for helping identify the man after the surveillance video circulated online.
