The Grand Ole Opry will honor the life, music and legacy of Country Music Hall of Fame member Charley Pride with a special Opry 100 Honors show on Tuesday, Sept. 22. More Entertainment News
Opry members Darius Rucker and Pam Tillis are scheduled to perform, along with Neal McCoy, Pride’s son Dion Pride and additional artists to be announced.
Pride grew up listening to Grand Ole Opry broadcasts on WSM radio and made his Opry debut in 1967. He was invited to join the cast early in his career but initially declined because of his demanding touring schedule. He officially became an Opry member in 1993 and remained one of the organization’s most respected ambassadors throughout his career.
One of country music’s most successful and influential performers, Pride recorded 29 No. 1 hits and 52 Top 10 singles during a career spanning more than five decades. He earned three GRAMMY Awards, sold tens of millions of records and became one of RCA Records’ best-selling artists. His catalog includes enduring hits such as “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” “All I Have to Offer You (Is Me),” “Mountain of Love,” “Burgers and Fries” and “Roll On Mississippi.”
As one of country music’s first Black superstars, Pride broke barriers and opened doors for generations of artists. Born in Sledge, Mississippi, he initially pursued a career in professional baseball before turning his attention to music.
After signing with RCA Records in the mid-1960s, Pride found his breakthrough with “Just Between You and Me.” He was named the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year in 1971 and earned consecutive Male Vocalist of the Year honors. That same era produced “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” which became an international crossover hit.
Pride was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. His honors also include the Academy of Country Music’s Pioneer Award and the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Tickets for Opry 100 Honors Charley Pride are on sale now. For tickets purchased beginning July 16, $5 from each Opry 100 Honors ticket will benefit the Opry Trust Fund, which provides financial assistance to country music professionals facing medical expenses, emergencies and other hardships.
