Today, November 3, is Election Day in Middle Tennessee, and polls are open across Cannon, Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Maury, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson counties. Voters will decide races up and down the ballot, including the governor’s race, a U.S. Senate seat, congressional and state legislative contests, and several local offices, along with proposed changes to the state Constitution. Early voting wrapped up October 29, so anyone who hasn’t cast a ballot yet will need to do it today at their assigned polling place. Here’s what you need to know before you head out, from what’s on your ballot and what ID to bring to how to check on an absentee ballot.

Who is on the Ballot?

Elections for Governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, Tennessee Senate (odd-numbered districts), Tennessee House, and Republican and Democratic State Executive Committees. General elections will be held for vacant state judicial offices and applicable county offices.

Proposed Amendments

Voters will see several proposed amendments on the ballot. Proposed amendments are listed directly after the candidates for governor. Each proposed amendment is a yes-or-no question:

A “yes” vote is a vote to amend the Constitution and adopt the language in the proposed amendment.
A “no” vote is a vote to keep the current language in the Constitution unchanged.

For an amendment to pass and become part of the Constitution, both of the following must happen:

The amendment must receive more “yes” votes than “no” votes; and
The number of “yes” votes must be more than half of all votes cast in the governor’s race.

What ID is Required When Voting?

Tennesseans must bring valid photo identification with them to the polls. A driver’s license or photo ID issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, by Tennessee state government or by the federal government are acceptable even if they are expired. College student IDs are not acceptable.

How can I Check the Status of my Absentee By-Mail Ballot?

The Secretary of State’s Absentee By-Mail Ballot Status Tracker tool allows voters to track the status of their absentee by-mail ballot.

You must mail your ballot in time for your county election commission to receive it no later than the close of polls on Election Day.  You must return your ballot by mail (USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc.). Hand delivery or handing it to a poll worker during early voting or on Election Day is not permitted.
