Nashville will celebrate Dolly Parton on Friday, Sept. 25, with a citywide day of kindness, music and giving inspired by the Tennessee icon. More Entertainment News
The date — 9/25 — is a nod to Parton’s hit song and movie 9 to 5.
The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp, Music Community Foundation, Office of Mayor Freddie O’Connell and Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce announced Dolly Day as a celebration of Parton’s generosity, music, entrepreneurial spirit and lasting connection to Nashville.
Throughout the day, residents, visitors, musicians and businesses will be encouraged to take part by wearing pink, supporting charitable causes and performing random acts of kindness.
“Dolly has shown us what can happen when generosity is rooted in a genuine love for community,” said Hal Cato, CEO of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee in a release. “Her example reminds us that each of us has something to give, whether it is our time, our resources, our talents or simply our kindness.”
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are also joining the celebration. The couple will donate all proceeds from Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky-Tonk on Sept. 25 to the Nashville Public Library and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Deana Ivey, president and CEO of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp., said the goal is to create a celebration that allows both locals and visitors to participate.
“We hope locals and visitors alike will find their own way to take part, whether it’s supporting a participating business, bringing Dolly Day to life in their own neighborhood, making a donation or simply doing something kind for someone else,” Ivey said.
Several activities are planned throughout Nashville.
At 5 p.m., participating music venues across the city will mark the occasion with live performances of “9 to 5.” Restaurants, coffee shops, and bars are encouraged to offer Dolly-inspired food and drink specials, with proceeds benefiting charity, while attractions can also donate portions of admission revenue.
The Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum plans to donate $9.25 from every admission to Parton’s Imagination Library.
Several Nashville landmarks, including the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge and Historic Metro Courthouse and City Hall, will be illuminated in pink. Businesses across the city are also encouraged to join in.
Visitors can stop by the Bridgestone Arena Visitor Information Center at 501 Broadway to leave messages describing how they plan to carry on Parton’s tradition of kindness. Free Dolly Day buttons, stickers and bookmarks will also be available at visitor centers at Bridgestone Arena and Fifth + Broadway while supplies last.
Project 615 will sell “Spread Love It’s the Dolly Way” T-shirts, with proceeds benefiting the Give Like Dolly Fund at the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
Neighborhoods will also have an opportunity to take part through the Dolly in the Districts program, which encourages family-friendly celebrations ranging from sidewalk art to community gatherings.
The day will conclude with a brief fireworks show at 9:25 p.m. in downtown Nashville.
