The City of Westmoreland is urging residents to boil their water before using it after a water main break caused chlorine levels in the water system to fall below required standards.
City officials said the drop in chlorine residual levels could allow bacteria and other harmful organisms to enter the water supply, creating a potential health risk.
Residents are advised not to drink tap water without first bringing it to a rolling boil for at least three minutes and allowing it to cool. Bottled or boiled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food until the notice is lifted.
The city also recommends discarding any recently stored drinking water or ice made from the affected water supply.
The City of Westmoreland is currently flushing water lines throughout the system to restore proper chlorine levels and move fresh, treated water through the distribution network.
The boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice. Residents with questions can contact Westmoreland City Hall at 615-644-3382.
