The Columbia Police Department opened the investigation in July after receiving complaints from concerned citizens and local businesses.

Undercover agents visited 50 businesses over the course of six weeks and found 20 locations allegedly conducting illegal gambling and paying out winnings.

Investigators also discovered that children as young as 9 were using the gambling machines at some locations. Officers said they also observed drug activity at several of the businesses.

Investigators determined that proceeds from the illegal gambling operation were being stored at two homes — one in Columbia and another in Gallatin.

On Aug. 25, authorities served 20 search warrants connected to the investigation. They seized:

  • $1,328,269 in cash
  • 144 gambling machines
  • Approximately 100 pounds of kratom

Thirteen people were arrested as a result of the investigation.

The operation involved multiple agencies including the Columbia Police Department, Gallatin Police Department, Portland Police Department, Internal Revenue Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
