Created to celebrate Madison’s musical history and growing creative community, the all-day festival will feature live music, local art, heritage crafts, family activities, food and more.
The evening concert at Harken Hall begins at 7 p.m. and will feature Carlene Carter, Oliver Wood and Lola Kirke.
Carter, the daughter of June Carter Cash and country singer Carl Smith and the stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, began performing with The Carter Family as a teenager. She later launched a solo career with her self-titled debut album and has continued carrying on her family’s musical legacy.
Oliver Wood, frontman of The Wood Brothers since 2004, blends folk, gospel, country-soul and Americana. His work has earned an international following and a Grammy nomination, while his solo albums include Always Smilin’ and Fat Cat Silhouette.
Singer, actress and author Lola Kirke will also perform. Known for pairing humor with heartfelt songwriting, Kirke has sold out venues including New York’s Bowery Ballroom and the Troubadour in West Hollywood. Her latest album is titled Trailblazer.
“Madison has been a cultural hub for decades, and we’re proud Harken Hall can bring Americana music back to the community,” said Harken Hall President Jamie Amos in a release. “Grassroots and Nudie Suits is a special way to bring our neighbors together, including newcomers as well as longtime residents.”
The festival’s name reflects two parts of Madison’s history. “Grassroots” honors the area’s bluegrass tradition and community pride, while “Nudie Suits” pays tribute to the rhinestone-covered stagewear worn by country legends including Hank Snow and Patsy Cline, both of whom lived in Madison.
The festival will take place around Amqui Station and Harken Hall. Amqui Station was saved by Johnny Cash in 1979 and later restored as a community center, while Harken Hall was designed specifically with live musical acoustics in mind.
Doors for the evening concert open at 6 p.m., with performances beginning at 7 p.m.
